How to describe a picture

  1. Recognize the picture, theme, and the author. First of all, you should start with an introductory sentence, in which you will very generally describe the picture’s theme. You have to recognize if the picture is a painting, drawing, sketch or photo. You can also try to tell who’s in the picture.
  2. Describe the general parts and elements of the picture. You should pay attention to what is on the picture and where it is. Here’s a list of some useful terms:
    In the background…
    In the foreground…
    On the left/right…
    In the left/right corner…
    At the top/bottom…
    In the middle…
  3.  Try to add more details. Here’s where you can prove your knowledge of the English language. Instead of saying “The girl is wearing a red dress”, you could add “The girl is wearing a red, midi dress and a floral scarf”.
  4. Describe the scenery and add a story to the picture. If you assume that there’s a story behind the picture, you can attempt to describe it in more detail. Try to describe the time of day, weather, and exactly what is happening i the picture.

How to be a good writer?

  1. Try to catch the essence of your thoughts. In order to deliver the main message of your writing you need to focus on the most important aspects and information. Try creating a list of main points, that you want to talk about in your essay.
  2. Learn to think in English. It can help you build complex sentences and avoid making mistakes. Also, thinking in English can save you time that you would have to spend on translating and make your work more efficient.
  3. Imagine you’re the reader. Trying to predict the reader’s thoughts and interests can help you write more interesting stories. Writing is not just about the spelling and grammar. It also has to pique your reader’s interest and make him want to see more of your work.

How to master reading in English

  1. Read a lot. That’s an obvious one. As we all know, practicing will help you improve your reading comprehension. The more you read, the more you understand. This rule is nothing new, but some of us still need to hear about it one more time, to gain motivation to read.
  2. Remember a context! Context plays an important part in every language. Without it, you won’t be able to recognize the main massage of the text you’re reading. It determines the meaning of specific words and phrases, and gives sense to the whole statement.
  3. What should I read? I recommend reading news (such as BBC, CNN or CBS). They contain a lot of useful, everyday vocabulary and are fairly easy to understand.

How can I learn to speak English?

  1. Realize that everyone makes mistakes. Nobody’s perfect, and even people who were born and raised in an English speaking country make mistakes and have trouble understanding some of the grammar rules. No one will judge you or make fun of you. In fact, some of the native speakers find it cute, attractive or funny when a foreign person is speaking their language imperfectly!
  2. Don’t overthink. The worst thing you can do to yourself when trying to learn a new language is overthink. If you put too much focus on something, it soon will stop making any sense, and you will never be able to understand it. Just go with the flow and don’t worry too much!
  3. Practice speaking with others. It’s important that you practice your language skills. You should find a study buddy, or a tutor that will help you become more comfortable with English. Apart from having small talk, sending text messages is another really good way to practice English. It helps you with spelling, reading comprehension and pronunciation (if you’re reading out loud).
